Bar Necessities is my dream cocktail app, made real.

There are a lot of other cocktail-making apps out there — over the years I think I’ve used most of them. Many of them are good, but I wanted one that met my needs in a way the existing ones didn’t:

• It needed to have a thoughtfully-curated and deeply-sourced drink library (I wanted all of the IBA-style cocktails and other notable ones, but didn’t want it to be overrun with bad drinks or wrong recipes).
• It needed to help me quickly identify which drinks I could make and what specific ingredients I should add to make more.
• It needed to have a built-in hosting feature that would let me share a list of makeable drinks with anybody coming over.

Bar Necessities is what emerged from these specifications, and I added an AI bartender to tie everything together (and dish out some snark in the process).

I’ve also built a full website to complement the app, which contains all of the recipes, detail on the ingredients, a cocktail quiz, articles on technique, and other fun components. I’m proud of it — it’s the cocktail resource I always wanted to exist, and now it’s the one I actually reach for.
